| A depressing story. | |

November 05, 2008 6:00 PM Sorry for the fact that there's no line breaks. It all started sometime in late August. My brother had been over at my dad's house who lives in Hugo. My dad is a mechanic and has about 35 years experience. He knows pretty much everything about cars. His neighborhood is being developed like none else. Houses being put up left and right. You would expect there to some random junk laying around here and there. Well, a misplaced piece of concrete was to blame for the totaling. My dad had said that if it weren't for the concrete, the car would have been perfectly fine. My brother had left my dad's house and was on his way home, and then my dad called him telling him that he had forgotten something. My brother had quickly turned around and headed down this one street. Now this street is hardly ever used, but it's a shortcut to my dad's house. It looks like a 4-way intersection, but when you get up to it you'd notice that you can only go right. There's curbing around the 4 corners of the intersection, but no streets except for the one on the right. There were no signs, markings, or indications that the road ended and it was night so my brother was a little too late at braking and turning. He overshot the turn and hit the curb, bounced up, and the front end of the car had landed on something. That something was the scrap piece of concrete. My brother had called my dad, who lived only a mere block away from the intersection, and had him pull the car out. Like I said my dad is a mechanic and he said that the car should be able to push itself to his house. No farther than that. He was right. My brother started it up, it sounded like a demo derby car with lots of pings and patters and drove it to my dad's house leaving a one and a half foot wide trail of black. When he got to his house the car died on him, and it was smoking up a storm. My dad said the reason for all the smoking was because the exhaust manifold (place the exhaust pipe meets the engine) had came clean off the engine, also causing it to be extremely loud. The car was front wheel drive, which made things worse, for the front axle had been pushed INTO the transmission. The oil pan (thing the oil collects in when it's not in the engine) had been swiped right off the engine, and that was the cause of the black streak going down the street. After my dad had inspected the car, he had estimated it to be about $10,000 to fix it so it is now sitting in a junkyard. My brother took out his subwoofers, amp, and his brand new stereo and let it get towed to the junkyard behind my dad's shop. That's where it is now. I would have gotten that car on my 16th birthday, but now it's gone and I'll probably get another piece of crap my dad finds and fixes. That's how the Beretta started, heck, it didn't have an engine! The ironic thing about it was that my brother had recently been having to repair it. First, his radiator cracked. $100. Next his turn signal inside the wheel broke. Free from my dad. Next, new tires because his dumb friend Josh shot an empty shot out of a BB gun at the passenger side mirror. It broke and shattered and when they got home they realized that the 2 passenger side tires had been punctured. $275. Last his spark plug lines weren't conducting like they were supposed to. $50. Now, because my dad's a mechanic my brother saved both money on the parts, and he saved money on labor. He didn't even have to pay for that. That's pretty much the story of it getting totaled. There's much more to tell about it, but I'll save that for later posts. What I classify as a ghettobanger is a car that has trouble getting past 90 mph, rusty and/or paint is chipping off, and it's at least 10 years old and in bad condition.
