September 05, 2008 6:00 PM Well I joined Cross Country this year. Here's the story: One day, last... July something, like in the twenties, I was minding my own business when all of the sudden my brother decided to bring me to a running store. He bought me a pair of $75 Nike shoes and we went back home. Well, later that day I was again minding my own business, I think I was on Jgames, and my brother's like "Let's go" and I was like "Where? ......Running?" and I was like "Oh god, I'll never be able to run alongside him.." he gave me a pair of running socks and we took off. That day we ran 2 miles and when I came back I collapsed on my front lawn. Yeah, I sucked. So the next day we ran one mile, I still died. We didn't run the next day, and then we ran 2 miles, then THREE miles, which turned out to be 3.5 miles, and then I really died! I couldn't lay down on our front lawn anymore though, my brother pelted me with rocks when I did the second time. And eventually, we got up to 4 miles... by then I was going okay. Somewhere mid-August, Cross Country started. I hated running with my brother. I didn't want to join Cross Country. Mostly I did it though because he bought me shoes. So I joined. We practiced for like a week and then had our first meet, which is pretty much a race between schools. It was at St. Catherine's in St. Paul. I was doing super great until the last half mile. I died. In the final stretch I sprinted and passed like 3 people though, giving me an end place of 97th out of like 130-160 people. But hey, this meet was 7th grade-12th grade so I was facing seniors! Plus it was 5 Kilometers which is like 3.1 miles. Our second meet was on the Thursday before school started. That one was at Lake Nokomis. This time there were six teams, Varsity (which is like super good runners), Junior Varsity (anybody else in high school), and Freshmen and under, and those were split into boys and girls. So I ran a steady pace most that race, which for Freshman boys was only 3 Kilometers, less than 2 miles. I did okay, and in the final stretch once again sprinted pass like 2 or 3 people for a place of 30th out of over 100 people. This last meet was yesterday, at the Isanti Golf Course. I got out of school early to go and went. This time it was Middle School Boys (2.3 K, like 1.4 miles), MS Girls (2 K), Varsity Boys (5K), Varsity Girls (4K), and JV Boys and girls which still had 5K and 4K. So we ran first. Me and Luke Thornquist and Solomon Tileskjor (Teliskjor?) decided to Pack Run which basically means... run together. Solomon kept in front of me, and me and Luke were pretty much neck and neck the entire time. So I finished that one for a place of... 4th! In CC, it doesn't matter that much who gets there FIRST, for scoring you add up the places of the top 6 runners. A team could have one person get 1st, but then the other people are in the twenties so they'd still lose. Team with the lowest score wins. I think Centennial MS won that race. ---------- >.< |

September 06, 2008 6:00 PM Um, great inspirational story? I'm no runner, but I am however an excellent bicycle rider. If I'm riding my mongoose, which is a trick bike with only 1 set of gears, I can outbike anyone/everyone in my neighborhood. That one's good for shorter sprints around 1.5 - 2 mi. Next I have my actual mountain bike that I got for my birthday. I always keep that thing tuned to perfection, if it's moving the brakes so they don't rub the wheel, or fixing my dumb gear shift that always somehow loosens up, (so if my gearshift said I was in 4th gear, I'd really be in 7th, 3rd for 6th, 2nd for 5th, and so on.). It's really funny though, I claim to be sponsored by Subway because I always get sheets of those "Hi My Name Is Ruben" stickers and I put them all over my bike. I told by brother if anyone else tries to get those stickers that he should say they already have a person that they're sponsoring or that they simply ran out. More about that mountain bike, that one is good for anything. The fastest I've gotten it to go was 27 mph, but I swear that those car things, (you know the speedtrap like things where it tells you your speed, and the speed limit), I think that they're rigged. One time me and my friends had a huge race, I don't know how long it was but it was a long one. We went from my house, to Centerville beach via Highway 14 (Main Street) and then when you got there you had to go to chominx golf course through the trails, then from chominx, CMS, then from there you had to get back to my house by taking lake drive. ---------- School school school school school WEEKEND! school school school school school WEEKEND! school.... |

Last year you didn't want to do the full mile! And you did 7 pull ups if I remember right... We have a pull up bar and I've been practicing and I can do 15 but hopefully I'll get better. ---------- >.< |
